Start with the business decision
Before collecting visual references, define why the project is happening. A new business needs a starting identity. An established company might need to clarify its position, reach a different audience or bring inconsistent materials together. These are different briefs and should lead to different priorities. Write down what needs to become clearer for the customer.
Describe the customer in practical terms
Go beyond broad labels such as “everyone” or “premium buyers”. Describe the situation that brings someone to your business, the alternatives they consider, the information they need and the concerns that slow their decision. A brand direction becomes easier to evaluate when the audience is specific.
List where the identity must work
A logo used on a shop sign, a product label and a mobile screen needs to remain legible in very different conditions. List the actual applications: packaging, social posts, uniforms, proposals, signage, exhibition panels or your website. Include print sizes and supplier requirements where they are already known.
Agree what the handover should contain
Request clarity on logo versions, export formats, colour specifications, typography, templates and editable source files. Font and image licences may have their own terms. A useful guideline explains how the team should use the identity after the design project ends.
Make feedback easier to act on
Nominate an approval contact and gather internal feedback before each review. Explain whether a direction supports the agreed customer and business objectives. Specific feedback about readability, tone or application is more actionable than personal preference alone.
Your starting checklist
Prepare your business background, audience description, competitor examples, existing assets, application list and launch requirements. You do not need a perfect strategy document. A clear account of the business and the decisions ahead is enough to begin a useful conversation.
